Lucknow: Dinesh Sahgal’s career spans a fascinating full spectrum of work culture. From academic lecture halls to the high-stakes environment of the state Information Department, and ultimately into the vibrant world of cinema, his journey reflects adaptability, technical acumen, and an unwavering passion for mentoring talent. Today, as the co-founder of the Indian Films Academy, he leverages over two decades of industry experience to shape the next generation of actors and film production experts.
The Academic Genesis
Armed with an M.Sc. in Mathematics from Lucknow University, a B.Ed., and a PG diploma in Computer Education, Sahgal began his professional journey at just 21 as a mathematics lecturer. Though his initial interest was modest, his dedication quickly took over once he saw the impact of his efforts. Within a year and a half, he expanded his repertoire to physics, delivering high-impact lectures and earning a significant income through private tuition.
His pedagogical methods yielded transformative results, causing college pass percentages in mathematics to skyrocket from 40–45% to an impressive 90%. Recognizing his academic contributions, former Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari presented him with the Best Teacher Award at an annual convocation. However, as youngsters began seeking his blessings at a very early age, Sahgal realized he desired a broader horizon and a different professional aura.
Two Decades of Public Service and Technological Evolution
With his father’s encouragement, Sahgal transitioned into the Information Department as an Assistant Statistical Officer. His tenure coincided with an era of massive technological transformation. From the early days of PCXT computers to fully integrated digital networks, Sahgal witnessed and guided the department’s modernization.
Having completed technical education at IET UPTU, he spearheaded vital digital initiatives such as custom advertisement software development, complete computerization of the departmental library, real-time election data collation, and upgrading the technical management of websites, public relations, and social media frameworks.
Influenced deeply by leaders like Ashok Priyadarshi, Anil Swarup, Rohit Nandan, and Shailesh Krishna, Sahgal spent nearly two decades overseeing Film Bandhu, which initially operated under Udyog Bandhu. He authored the landmark 2023 Film Policy, coordinated official government delegations to Mumbai on three occasions, and helped position Uttar Pradesh as a premier cinematic hub. Under his stewardship, the state earned the “Most Film Friendly State” title alongside multiple special mentions at prestigious festivals in Mumbai and Goa, laying the groundwork for the ambitious Noida Film City project to bear fruition.
Building the Indian Films Academy
Eleven months ago, Dinesh Sahgal partnered with Yogesh Mishra to establish the Indian Films Academy (IFA). The institute provides a respectable platform for deserving talent who lack high-level industry backing, offering realistic opportunities outside Mumbai for primary, secondary, and tertiary artists, which simultaneously boosts local employment and state revenue.
The Academy focuses on practical, real-world execution over purely theoretical concepts. Students undergo high-end audition preparation and training in cinematic acting, writing, and directing, building confidence to face the camera fearlessly for films, web series, OTT projects, and documentaries. The curriculum also incorporates wellness through yoga, while providing affordable hostel facilities for both male and female students. Expanding its digital footprint, the team recently launched a YouTube channel named Pichrapa Planet.
Currently guiding 20 dedicated students selected through careful observation, Sahgal emphasizes human potential over shortcuts. While acknowledging that AI streamlines technical workflows, he firmly believes human logic and authenticity remain indispensable. Guided by the philosophy that content is king, IFA operates on a clear motto: “Hum Sapne Dikhate Nahi, Hum Sapne Saakaar Karte Hain.”
